About rewiring

When to
rewire.

Most properties built before 1970 have electrical installations that are either approaching or past the end of their safe working life. Signs that a rewire may be needed include a fuseboard with ceramic fuses rather than MCBs, old rubber-insulated wiring, sockets without earth connections, or a failed or borderline EICR.

A full rewire involves replacing all wiring back to the consumer unit, installing a new modern consumer unit with RCDs and MCBs, and fitting new sockets, switches and light fittings throughout. All wiring is concealed in walls and ceilings — this requires making good afterwards, which is typically carried out by a plasterer after our electrical work is complete.

All our rewire work is notified to Building Control under Part P of the Building Regulations, and an Electrical Installation Certificate is issued on completion.

Survey & quote

Walls and ceilings are made good ready for your plasterer and decorator. We can refer a plasterer if needed.

Do I need to move out during a rewire?
Not necessarily, but it is strongly recommended for the first-fix phase as you will be without power in sections of the property. Most clients find it easier to stay elsewhere for the first 2–3 days.
Does a rewire include plastering?
No — the electrical work includes chasing cable runs and making walls structurally good, but finishing plaster and decoration are separate. We work closely with plasterers and can recommend one.
How do I know if I need a rewire?
The clearest indication is a failed or C1/C2 coded EICR. Other signs include a fuseboard with old-style rewirable fuses, sockets without an earth pin, or persistent RCD trips. We can carry out an EICR to assess the installation before recommending a full rewire.
Will a rewire increase my property's value?
Yes — a modern electrical installation with certification is increasingly important to buyers and mortgage lenders. It also removes the need for significant expenditure for the next 25–30 years.
What is Part P?
Part P of the Building Regulations requires that certain types of electrical work in dwellings are either carried out by a registered electrician or notified to Building Control for inspection. All our rewire work is fully notified and certified.
