Almost every flooring complaint traces back to it. A floor that is not flat gives a hollow, ticking LVT floor. A floor that is damp lifts and cups engineered wood. Twenty minutes with a level and a moisture meter at survey stage prevents the expensive version of this conversation.
Engineered wood, yes, if it is glued or floated with the right underlay and the heating is commissioned and cycled properly first. Solid wood is a poor idea over underfloor heating and we would talk you out of it.

A typical room is one to two days once the subfloor is ready. If levelling compound is needed it has to dry, which usually adds a day.

Why flooring installation is mostly what is underneath.
Almost every complaint about a new floor is a subfloor problem wearing a flooring problem's clothes. A floor that ticks underfoot, a plank that has cupped, a tile that has cracked along a joint, an LVT floor that shows every ripple in the light. None of those are the fault of the covering. They are the fault of what it was laid on, and they are all visible to a fitter with a level and a moisture meter before anything is ordered.
Flatness
Thin coverings telegraph. Luxury vinyl and laminate follow the floor beneath them exactly, so a three millimetre dip becomes a three millimetre dip you can see across the room in low sun. Levelling compound or a ply overlay fixes it, and both need time to dry before fitting can start.
Moisture
A screed that has not dried, or a solid floor with no membrane, will lift engineered wood and debond adhesive. Moisture readings take minutes and decide whether a damp proof membrane goes down first. Skipping the reading is how fitters end up relaying floors at their own cost.
Movement and expansion
Wood and vinyl floors move with temperature and humidity. They need an expansion gap at every perimeter and every threshold, hidden under beading or refitted skirting. A floor fitted tight to the wall has nowhere to go and lifts in the middle of the room in the first warm spell.
What we do before quoting
We lift a corner of the existing covering, check level across the room, take moisture readings and look at what the floors are built from. Preparation is then shown as its own line on the quote. It is the honest way to price flooring installation, and it is why our fitting prices sometimes look higher than a supply and fit deal that assumes a perfect subfloor nobody has looked at.

We also work in south east London, in Greenwich, Blackheath and Lewisham.
