A garden wall gets weather on both faces and along the top, with no roof to protect it. It is the most exposed masonry you own, and the most often repaired in a way that makes it worse.

Rain hits both faces and soaks in from the top, so a garden wall never fully dries. In a London winter that saturated brick freezes and the faces spall, while the house wall a few metres away is untouched.
Footings are the other half of the story. Many garden walls sit on very shallow foundations, and London clay shrinks in dry summers and swells in winter. A nearby tree drawing moisture out of the ground makes the movement worse, which is where the lean and the stepped cracks come from.
Most walls fail
from the top down.
The coping is the wall's only roof. When it cracks or loses its bedding, water runs straight down into the core and blows the brick faces from the inside.
That is why so many garden wall repairs fail: the faces get repointed and the coping is left alone. Fix the top first and the rest of the work lasts.

Which one you need depends on whether the wall is still moving.
Repoint and re-cope
For a sound, upright wall with eroded joints and loose copings. Joints raked out and repointed in a matched mortar, copings rebedded with a proper drip.
Partial rebuild
Where one section has bulged, cracked through or been hit, that length is taken down and rebuilt, toothed into the sound wall either side.
Full rebuild
Where the faces have separated, the lean is increasing or the footing is the problem. The wall comes down and goes back up on a proper foundation, reusing sound bricks.

Conservation areas
Much of west London is covered, and demolishing a wall over one metre next to a highway, or two metres elsewhere, can need consent. Partial demolition can count, so check first.
Party fence walls
A wall standing astride the boundary falls under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996, and work to it needs written notice to your neighbour, generally a month ahead.

A wall holding back soil carries far more load than a free standing one and needs drainage behind it. It is designed, not just rebuilt.
Notting Hill, Kensington and Chelsea
West London front garden walls are often low brick or stucco walls with railings or piers, on streets inside the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea conservation areas. Loose piers, rusting railing fixings and cracked copings are the usual faults. Repairs match the original brick, render and coping detail so the street frontage stays consistent.
